Coureur, puis journaliste et voyageur à record, Robert Louis Jefferson (1866-1914), américain naturalisé anglais, se rendra depuis Londres à Constantinople, à Moscou, à Khiva. Il multiplie ainsi les voyages à bicyclette pendant une vingtaine d’année. Il fut proche et parfois sponsorisé par l’industriel du cycle John Kemp Starley, qui lança le Rover safety bicycle.
